In a coastal village in Indonesia, there lived a young man named Malin Kundang with his poor mother. His mother worked tirelessly to raise him and provide a decent life despite their difficult circumstances. Malin was an ambitious young man who dreamed of traveling far away to achieve wealth and success. One day, a merchant ship arrived at the village, and Malin decided to leave with the sailors in search of a better future. Despite his mother’s deep sadness, she allowed him to go, hoping he would return someday. Years passed, and Malin did not return, leading his mother to believe he had forgotten her. After many years, Malin returned to his village, no longer poor but a wealthy man married to a beautiful woman. When his mother saw the luxurious ship, she felt that her son had finally returned and hurried to meet him. However, when she approached him and called his name, Malin denied knowing her. Ashamed of her simple appearance in front of his wife, he pushed her away harshly, breaking her heart. In a moment of pain and anger, his mother raised her hands to the sky and prayed for God to punish her son for his disobedience. Suddenly, the weather changed, and the sea grew violent. A powerful storm struck the ship, destroying it within moments. Malin himself turned into stone on the shore. It is said that this stone still exists today as a reminder of the consequences of disobedience. This story carries a deep moral lesson, warning against pride and forgetting one’s roots, while emphasizing the importance of respecting and honoring parents. The tale of Malin Kundang has become one of the most famous folktales in Indonesia, passed down through generations to teach important human values
